Survey: Skilled Immigrants Going Home

A recent survey of Indian and Chinese skilled laborers released Monday indicates the lure of the U.S. economy is waning.

The poll of 1,203 workers who returned home cite the improvements in their native countries' economies as the force behind their move, reports the San Jose Mercury News. Many of the workers polled came to Silicon Valley to study and work, according to the results compiled by researchers at Duke, Harvard and the University of California.

Most of the workers said their careers thrived once they moved home and half said they planned to start their own companies within the next five years.
"Having worked in the U.S., they have skills that make them more valuable back home," the study's principal author, Vivek Wadwha, a researcher on immigration and labor issues at Duke and Harvard, told the newspaper. "They go back home and live like kings."
